The Meaning of the Cardinal

My mother always said that our ancestors visit us through birds — especially cardinals to guide us through life’s challenges. After my maternal grandfather passed, a single cardinal began appearing outside our kitchen window every morning, almost like clockwork. When my uncle passed two years later, two cardinals showed up — faithfully, every day.

Years later, during my newborn son’s first Thanksgiving, I was preoccupied with family tensions surrounding his name. While driving him around my old neighborhood as he slept in the backseat, a cardinal perched on my side mirror. It looked at me, then at my son, back and forth — for what felt like a full minute. That moment stayed with me. I’m not superstitious, but I’ve always been “a little-sticious,” and something about that quiet exchange made me a believer. The timing, the gaze, the presence — it felt intentional. It was as if the cardinal was reminding me that I wasn’t alone, that I was being watched over, and that my son was too. After years of seeing cardinals during difficult transitions, this time I bought in.

Most recently, as I walked my dog and weighed the risks and rewards of launching REFS, LLC, cardinals crossed my path again and again. Their presence was unmistakable — a quiet affirmation that I was on the right track.

Cardinals have always represented support, clarity, and guidance. That’s why I chose the cardinal as the symbol of REFS, LLC: to embody the same spirit of watchful care and purposeful direction that I strive to offer every client

About Me

I am an accounting and operations leader with more than 20 years of experience supporting founders, family offices, real estate groups, and CPA practices. Before launching REFS, LLC, I spent over 11 years as Chief Financial Officer for JCR Companies, where I oversaw corporate and property accounting, investor and lender reporting, internal controls, tax and audit planning, cash management, and multi-entity operations. During that time, I supported the firm’s growth from approximately $85 million to more than $300 million in assets under management.

Earlier in my career, I held senior accounting roles at Transwestern, Tishman Speyer, Blake Real Estate, Atlantic Realty Companies, and First Washington Realty. Through these positions, I developed deep expertise in financial operations, systems optimization, and building clean, reliable reporting structures that owners and CPAs can trust.

Today, I bring that same high-touch, embedded approach to my consulting practice, helping clients strengthen financial operations through hands-on accounting support and tailored workflow improvements.

I hold degrees in Business Administration (Marketing) from Muhlenberg College and Accounting from Hofstra University, and I am currently a CPA candidate in the state of Maryland.
